AZERBAIJANI DEPUTY RAISE ISSUE OF ARMENIAN NUCLEAR STATION CLOSURE

Member of Milli Majlis delegation to the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe Rafael Huseynov have prepared nine documents on ecological problems for the passed 4 years. Four documents claimed the necessity of closing down nuclear power station of Armenia, which is the serious threat to the region. At the same time, R. Huseynov put forward this issue at the Committee on environment and discussion at the Assembly. On the first day of the PACE summer session, R. Huseynov presented a document to the Committee of Ministers of the Council of Europe. The document was then published.

Ardently continuing actions contrary to the Council of Europe principles, Armenia keeps 20 percent of the territory of the other member-state – Azerbaijan Republic – under occupation and this country poses serious threat to ecology of the Southern Caucasus and other adjoining states.

The reactor of Metsamor nuclear station was mounted in the soviet period and now such reactors are no longer used in Europe. For the passed three years, there were numerous accidents at the station, which stopped the operation.

Providing that Metsamor is located in the seismically active zone the issue of nuclear station closure becomes urgent. As 2002-2003 earthquakes were quire slight they did not damage Metsamor. If the station sustain regular tremors it must be a signal especially after the destructive Spitak quake.

PACE prepared four documents urging to close the station. Despite some calls of international organizations to close the station, the Armenian government did not respond to them. European Union many times suggested Armenia to close Metsamor but Armenia rejected them. As a result, European Union had to impose an economic sanction on Armenia by refusing to allocate $100 million.

The possibility of accidents at Metsamor rise every year and in this case it will have an effect on neighboring Georgia, Azerbaijan, Turkey and other region’s states as they will be subjected to powerful nuclear blow.

Putting all these points in the document R. Huseynov applies to the Committee of Ministers by urging them to pay a special attention on seriousness of situation around Metsamor station and press on the government of Armenia to close the station.
