Azerbaijani flag raised in London Olympic village
Baku, July 25 (AZERTAC). A flag-raising ceremony of the Azerbaijan Olympic delegation has today been held at 15:30 local time in London’s Olympic village.
Members of the Azerbaijani delegation, including Minister of Youth and Sports Azad Rahimov, his deputy - Ismayil Ismayilov, Vice-President of the National Olympic Committee Khazar Isayev, chef de mission Ilham Madatov, other officials and sportsmen attended the event.
Mayor of London’s Olympic village opened the ceremony. He welcomed the Azerbaijani delegation and wished them successes.
The first delegation of Azerbaijan consists of 32 members and includes sportsmen, officials, coaches and doctors.
The second group of Azeri athletes will leave for London on 4 August.
The 30th Summer Olympic Games will officially start on July 27.
The Azerbaijani delegation will appear 14th in the opening march. The national flag bearer of the Azerbaijani Olympic Team will be the Beijing Olympic winner, judo fighter Elnur Mammadli.
The Evening of Azerbaijan will be held in London on July 28, featuring the demonstration of documentaries on Azerbaijan and concerts of Azeri mugham masters, jazz and opera singers.
The Azerbaijani team will participate in the Summer Olympic Games with such a large squad for the first time.
Some 53 Azerbaijani sportsmen will vie for Olympic medals in 16 events, with 41 of them making their Olympic debut.
