Azerbaijani refugees and IDPs in spotlight of Italian newspaper

Online Italian newspaper “Il Giornale” has posted an article highlighting the current status of Azerbaijani refugees and internally displaced persons in the context of the migrant crisis in Europe. The article says that the fact that millions of people are forced to leave their homes is “a tragedy of humanity and serious social problem”. “In this sense, it is necessary to emphasize the problem of Azerbaijani refugees and internally displaced persons. As a result of the Armenian occupation of the Nagorno-Karabakh region of Azerbaijan and seven surrounding districts in the early 1990s, the Azerbaijani population of this region was subjected to ethnic cleansing.” “More than one million Azerbaijanis, who fled their homes, have become refugees and IDPs. However, the West, in particular, European organizations, turn a blind eye to this fact,” the article says. The newspaper also highlights Azerbaijan’s oil and gas strategy and rapid economic growth, saying it allows the government to properly address the problems of refugees and IDPs.
