CONGRESSWOMAN FOXX MAKES STATEMENT ON HEYDAR ALIYEV`S 85TH BIRTHDAY
Virginia Foxx, Republican Congresswoman from North Carolina, who serves on the House Committees on Agriculture, Government Reform, and Education and the Workforce, made Friday a statement on the occasion of Heydar Aliyev`s 85th birthday anniversary in the Congress.
The Congresswoman said Heydar Aliyev was a strong leader at times of crisis and became a president of Azerbaijan in 1993 when the whole region was experiencing political chaos and economic uncertainty. “He managed to protect his country from struggle for influence of regional forces and global changes. Heydar Aliyev concluded an agreement with Armenia on ceasefire. He started to boost relationships with the United States, Turkey, Israel and Western European countries, expanded ties with international and regional organizations, including the United Nations, NATO, the Council of Europe and the OSCE and carried out successful reforms which opened the country`s doors for foreign investors.”
Dr. Foxx spoke of importance of Azerbaijan`s natural resources to provide energy security of the West, saying the Baku-Tbilisi-Ceyhan pipeline was Heydar Aliyev`s dream. “This project supported by both Clinton and Bush administrations was realized despite strong opposition, and at the moment one million barrel of oil is being transported through this pipeline.”
The Republican Congresswoman stressed President Heydar Aliyev`s undeniable role in establishment of strategic partnership between Azerbaijan and the United States, praising Azerbaijan`s unconditional support to the United States immediately after the September 11 terror act, as well as sending its military forces to Iraq and Afghanistan as the first Muslim country.
Ms. Foxx said today Azerbaijan is going on President Heydar Aliyev`s way of democracy and economic development. She said the United States hopes to continue partnership with Azerbaijan on issues of mutual interests in the region and the whole globe.
