Baku, March 19 (AZERTAC). The European Parliament adopted offers of the European Commission on supply of gas security of the European Union member states.

According to the new strategy, gas suppliers should ensure supplies to protected customers in the event of extreme temperatures during a seven day peak period and for 45 days of exceptionally high demand, during the coldest weather. The Commission had originally proposed

60 days.

The members of the Parliament changed the threshold for declaring a “Union emergency”, and extended the range of cases in which the Commission may act.

According to the amended version, an EU emergency response would be triggered automatically (though the circumstances are verified by the Commission) when:

- more than one Member State has declared a national emergency,

- the EU suffers a loss of more than 20% of its daily gas imports from third countries, or

- a Member State within a specific EU region has declared an emergency or the region as a whole suffers a loss of more than 10% of its daily gas imports from a third country.
