FIFA AND UEFA PRESIDENTS HOLD PRESS CONFERENCE IN BAKU
Presidents of FIFA and UEFA held October 17 a press conference at the AFFA building.
On situation around Euro 2008 qualifying games between Azerbaijan and Armenia, Mr. Blatter said FIFA would try to avoid teams "with complicated political relations" being drawn in the same group.
FIFA President underlined that main aim of the Association is to render assistance to the national federations and develop football in all countries. “We will continue our cooperation with Azerbaijan and make all efforts to develop football in the country”, said Mr. Blatter.
UEFA president Michel Platini, in his turn, underlined it was a "mistake" to have Azerbaijan and Armenia - which have no diplomatic relations - in the same Euro 2008 qualifying group. "We will try that both teams never face each other again," said Platini.
Mr. Platini didn’t exclude conducting final matches of the European Championship in Azerbaijan. “If Azerbaijan nominates its candidature, European Football Association will examine it. But, it will be not earlier than 2016 year”, said UEFA President.
At the close of the press conference, FIFA and UEFA pennants were handed over AFFA’s Secretary General Elkhan Mammadov. Mr. Blatter conferred FIFA’s order upon Azerbaijani Minister of Youth and Sport Azad Rahimov.
