FIVE AZERBAIJANI WRESTLERS WIN OLYMPIC LICENSES AT WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP IN BAKU
The world free-style and Greco-Roman wrestling championships finished September 23 at the Heydar Aliyev Sport and Concert Complex.
The opening ceremony was attended by the Head of State, President of the National Olympic Committee Ilham Aliyev, and President of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation, UNESCO and ISESCO goodwill ambassador, MP, Mehriban Aliyeva.
The championship gathered some 900 athletes from over 100 countries. The athletes taking top eight places qualified for the 2008 Beijing Olympic Games.
Azerbaijani male wrestlers Farid Mansurov gained a gold medal while Jamsulvar Jamsulvarayev a bronze medal.
Female wrestlers Maria Stadnik, Yulia Radkevich and Olesya Zamula won the Olympic licenses.
Azerbaijan Greco-roman wrestling team ranked 16th with 11 points. USA took the first spot on medals list, Russia the second spot while Georgia the third one.
Azerbaijan men’s free-style wrestling team placed 9th with 12 points.
Russia topped the medals list, and was followed by Turkey and Cuba.
Japan female wrestling team took the first place while Kazakhstan and Ukraine second and third respectively. Azerbaijan is 11th.
Azerbaijani wrestlers will get a chance to win Olympic licenses at the upcoming two international tournaments and one European championship.
The reception in honor of the athletes and guest was given at the Gulustan Palace.
