“It is encouraging to see the growing number of international NGOs expressing their concerns and opposition to the construction of the metallurgical plant in Arazdayan. The statement issued by these civil society organizations highlights the importance of adhering to internationally recognized standards and principles, such as the Espoo Convention, which emphasizes the assessment of environmental impact in transboundary contexts,” representative of the Health & Family Welfare Department of the West Bengal Government, Indian Hashim Abdul Halim told AZERTAC.
“The collective voice of these NGOs underscores the potential environmental catastrophe that could arise from the establishment of this large-scale metallurgical plant. The recognition that the plant's operations could have far-reaching implications for human health, the environment, and sustainability is crucial in addressing this issue effectively. Furthermore, the mention of potential harm to the local ecosystem, including the Araz river and the wildlife and farms dependent on its water, highlights the significance of protecting not only the immediate environment but also the livelihoods of those affected by this project.
The call for intervention from relevant international organizations, such as the UN Environment Program, the World Health Organization, and the UN Special Rapporteurs, demonstrates the need for a coordinated response to address these environmental transgressions. Additionally, urging the United States of America to reconsider its support for the construction of the metallurgical plant emphasizes the importance of responsible decision-making and cooperation between nations. It is heartening to witness the solidarity and mobilization of civil society organizations in raising awareness about this critical issue. The increasing number of countries supporting the statement further strengthens the global call for action to protect the environment and safeguard the well-being of communities affected by potentially harmful industrial projects.
Together, through continued collaboration and advocacy, we can work towards finding sustainable solutions and ensuring that the construction and operation of industrial facilities align with international standards, prioritizing the preservation of the environment and the welfare of local communities,” he added.
