Italy hosts conference on mine clearance in Azerbaijan

On April 14, a conference titled “Mine Clearance: Preventing Danger, Rebuilding the Future. Azerbaijan’s Perspective” was held in the Italian Senate at the initiative of Marco Scurria, Head of Italy-Azerbaijani Interparliamentary Friendship Group, Member of Italian Senate, organized by the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Italy with the participation of the Azerbaijan National Agency for Mine Action.
Marco Scurria provided insight into Azerbaijan’s landmine problem.
He noted the existing cooperation between the two countries in the field of mine clearance, adding that the problem is delaying the peace process and the return of citizens to their homes.
Ettore Rosato, Secretary of the Chamber of Deputies' Security of the Italian Republic Committee, praised the rapid reconstruction efforts in Karabakh, highlighting the importance of operations in mine-contaminated areas.
Ambassador Gianluca Brusco, Head of Unit at the Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MAECI), stressed the importance of the event. He also mentioned the prospects for cooperation between the mine clearance agencies of the two countries.
Samir Poladov, Deputy Chairman of the Board of Azerbaijan's Mine Action Agency (ANAMA), highlighted the mine threat in Azerbaijan and its tragic consequences.
Noting that mines are the main obstacle to reconstruction and restoration efforts, Samir Poladov highlighted the demining methods used in Azerbaijan.
Giuseppe Schiavello, Director of the Campaign to Ban Landmines, emphasized Italia’s experience in this field.
Fabrizio Conti, Creative Director of the “ArtCloud Network International,” a company involved in the reconstruction, architecture, and preservation of cultural heritage in Karabakh, shared his experience of visiting the liberated territories.
The event concluded with the screening of the two videos about women deminers and the situation across the liberated areas.
