MEETING ON BIODIVERSITY CONSERVATION HELD
Agrobiodiversity is extremely important for food security, protection of ecosystem and conservation of nature, Director General of the International Institute for Genetic Resources of Plants said. The species of animals and plant, according to him, their sorts, forms and hybrids are the component parts of the global biodiversity and serve steadiness of agricultural system, local population’s health, life support. 8100 species of plants were registered in the region of Central Asia and South Caucasus and 890 of them are endemic.
There are many problems coupled with agrobiodiversity. Most troublesome one is the genetic erosion. According to national “red books”, today over 400 species of plants are on the brink of extinction. The reason lies in the deterioration of cultivated lands, sameness of today’s plants, frequent droughts etc.
The only way-out is to coordination of activity among producers and scolars, bioregional approach to this problem, preservation of genetic resources, including biodiversity in natural ecosystems, documentation and spread of traditional plants conservation of biodiversity depends on each man.
