POLICE DETAINS TELEPHONE TERRORISTS

The looming international terrorism, tragic terrorist acts committed in some countries of Europe and Central Asia made it urgent to toughen security measures in Azerbaijan, said press-service of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and office of the Public Prosecutor. Law-enforcement bodies of Azerbaijan have taken important steps towards protection of public and national security.

Besides, the information on anonymous telephone calls warning of imminent explosions in crowds has been lately circulated in media as well as among people.

The law-enforcement bodies received telephone calls warning on allegedly expected explosions at embassy of Turkey to Azerbaijan, Jewish religious society and Baku subway. The rumors, however, turned out to be false. Legal proceedings into these cases were instituted in compliance with the Criminal Code articles “Giving of wittingly false information on terror” and “Hooliganism”.

The search operations carried out by law-enforcement bodies resulted in arresting resident of Baku, schoolboy Nadir Aydin oglu Babayev, 15, who gave false information on imminent explosion at the TV Company “Space” on April 10, 2004. Police also arrested former prisoner Ramiz Muradov and mentally sick Medina Mehdiyeva who are accused of giving wittingly false information.

Police launched investigations into the cases.
