President of Turkey Recep Tayyip Erdogan has described a military coup attempt as betrayal, saying this will not remain unanswered. He made a press statement upon his arrival at Ataturk International Airport in Istanbul.

"A group within the Turkish armed forces, which cannot accept people`s unity and solidarity, betrayed their motherland. They will be held accountable for this."

The President said: "This betrayal has necessitated the cleaning up within the Turkish armed forces."
