PRESIDENT OF AZERBAIJAN RECEIVES FOREIGN MINISTER OF DENMARK
Having greeted the guest sincerely, the Azerbaijani President let him know that Azerbaijan is closely integrating into European structures. He noted in this connection that the country is not only a full member of the Council of Europe for over three years, but also is closely cooperating with other international organizations including the European Union. Our active involvement in the EU’s new neighborhood program and appointment of the organization’s special rapporteur for the South Caucasus is an indication of the rapidly developing relations between Azerbaijan and the Union, he said.
Pointing out the great possibilities for expanding Azerbaijan-Denmark relationship, the Azerbaijani leader expressed hope that the visit of the Danish Foreign Minister to the country would contribute to development of cooperation not only on bilateral basis but also in the framework of the European Union.
President Ilham Aliyev further noted that Azerbaijan, which had re-gained its independence 10 years ago, holds very important geo-strategic position in the region, but the continuing Armenian aggression against the country threatens peace and stability not only in the republic but also in the whole region.
He emphasized that Azerbaijan had been taking huge efforts for finding peaceful resolution of the Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno-Karabakh conflict that, according to him, is possible only on the base of such international principles as those of territorial integrity and inviolability of borders.
The President finally expressed confidence that the international community would intensify its efforts to find fair solution to the conflict as soon as possible.
Minister of Foreign Affairs of Denmark Per Stig Moeller thanked the Azerbaijani President for the warm meeting and described his first visit to Azerbaijan as very important from the standpoint of development and expanding bilateral relations. Expressing satisfaction with the meetings he had held in Baku, the Minister highly valued the significance of the economic progress in the country for people’s welfare, and forecasted very good future for Azerbaijan.
He expressed confidence that the Danish companies operating in energy sector of Azerbaijan would further promote economic growth in Azerbaijan.
Mr. Moeller also appreciated and highly valued Azerbaijan’s involvement in the international fight against terror, particularly, the country’s active participation in the anti-terror operations in Kosovo, Afghanistan and Iraq. He finally expressed deep gratitude to President Ilham Aliyev for the support for Denmark’s membership of the UN Security Council.
Then, President of Azerbaijan Ilham Aliyev and Foreign Minister of Denmark Per Stig Moeller exchanged views on a number of other issues of mutual interest.
