US Defense Secretary Rumsfeld made the statement at a news conference after the meetings with Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Defense Minister Safar Abiyev on August 12.

According to the US secretary of Defense, they also discussed Azerbaijan’s involvement in international forces for ensuring security at the elections in Iraq that will be held under the UN aegis.

Meanwhile, he noted that an increase of the Azerbaijani peacekeeping contingent in the coalition forces in Iraq and Afghanistan was not considered during talks in Baku.

As many as 150 Azerbaijani peacekeepers have ensured security in Iraq as part of the coalition forces since August 2003.

Rumsfeld also noted that Iran’s possibility to develop its nuclear programs causes much concern in the world. In most cases the Iranian side does not meet satisfactorily requests and requirements of the International Atomic Energy Agency.

After talks in Baku the US secretary of Defense flied to Ukraine.
