PRESS CONFERENCE ON CONCLUSIONS OF VISIT OF WALTER SCHWIMMER TO AZERBAIJAN HELD
Speaking about the results of his 2-day visit, W. Schwimmer expressed satisfaction with the results of the meetings he held in Baku. He reminded that Azerbaijan already more than three years is the full member of the Council of Europe, and for so short term many of existing difficulties have been successfully overcome. According to CE Secretary General, Azerbaijan successfully carries out the obligations taken before the Council of Europe, having reminded that for the past period many of basic documents of this Organization were ratified. At the same time, the visitor has assessed two last decrees about the amnesty, signed by President Ilham Aliyev, having emphasized that leadership of СЕ welcomes similar acts of good will by the part of leadership of Azerbaijan.
Walter Schwimmer stated that the basic theme discussed by him during the current visit, was the question of settlement of the Armenia-Azerbaijan Nagorny Karabakh conflict. “ Nagorny Karabakh is not only the problem of Azerbaijan, Armenia or the South Caucasian region, it is also the problem of all Europe”, the Secretary General told, having emphasized that he personally opposes the term of the “frozen conflict”, and the Armenia-Azerbaijan problem should be shortly solved by peace dialogue.
“Sequences of the conflict daily feel on themselves of hundred thousand of refugees and IDPs and I first of all act for their prompt returning to the native lands. EU is ready to give to the sides of the conflict any legal and advisory help”, W. Schwimmer said, having noted that the Council of Europe makes all efforts for support of activity of the OSCE Minsk Group.
He cited examples of peace settlement of conflicts - successful resolution to similar conflicts in the Western Europe, and, in particular, between Germany and France, and also Italy and Austria.
Chairman of Milli Majlis, in turn, has expressed satisfaction visit of the CE Secretary General and results of the his meetings.
Concerning the topic of integration of Azerbaijan to Europe, M. Alaskarov has noted that the passed presidential elections again have confirmed adherence of the leadership of the Republic to principles of democracy. “The Election Code of Azerbaijan highly has been appreciated not only by local experts, but also by representatives of the international organizations, and elections on October 15 were the most democratic for all history of the Azerbaijan Republic”, the Speaker of Azerbaijan Parliament stressed.
