“SECURITY THROUGH SCIENCE” WORKSHOP HELD IN BAKU
The rector of University, corresponding member of ANAS Abel Maharramov, warmly having welcomed members of Scientific Committee of the NATO and other participants of the seminar, has noted value of the said action. He also in detail informed visitors on the Day of National Salvation, invaluable merits of our national leader Heydar Aliyev in preservation of the state independence of Azerbaijan.
Deputy secretary general of the NATO, Dr Kith Gardner has acted with the report on the topic “View at safety of the NATO in aspect of the scientific program”. Informing about the program of safety by means of science, K. Gardner has told: “Events on September 11, 2001 and the new attention given by the states to struggle against terrorism, have essentially affected the NATO and its program. Therefore, the Scientific Program of the NATO corresponds to new missions of the Alliance. With the help of this program from countries - members and partners of the NATO, and also the Mediterranean states grants for cooperation on the major safety issues are given out to 53 scientific researchers. Besides, there have been developed long-term projects on application of technology to problems of safety. We also carry out consultations in the NATO partner-states. By the way, the representative of Azerbaijan in Scientific Committee of the NATO has presented the list of the important themes. It covers changes in ecology of the Caspian, safety of oil and gas mains, data and communication infrastructure and biodiversity.
Speaking about programs of cooperation of the NATO in which Azerbaijan is involved also, the lecturer has told: “The Azerbaijan scientists are involved in numerous research programs. The number of the given programs includes methods of estimation and conversion of the risks caused by unsuitable rocket fuel, forecasting of the disasters connected to mud volcanoes, seismic risk in large cities of the Caucasus, combat against terrorism and nuclear safety, development of steady system of underground waters in cities and management of waters on the Southern Caucasus. In particular, I would like to note the contribution of the NATO to process of expansion of computer network to Azerbaijan. With the help of the satellite and as a result of realization of such actions as “Virtual Silk Road”, Internet - opportunities of scientific community of Azerbaijan have considerably increased. It is vital for scientific researchers and serves as a bright example of the contribution brought by the NATO in development of science in the partner-states, including Azerbaijan.
The guest also has stopped on the future of the program “Safety through science” in the extending NATO.
In the workshop, also was reporting member of the Scientific Committee of the NATO, representative of France Michel Ferie, “Safety by means of international cooperation in applied sciences”, president of ANAS, academician Mahmuda Kerimov - “What does expect Azerbaijan from cooperation with the NATO? ”, rector of BSU, the president of the Network of the Black Sea Universities Abel Maharramov “Program of the Network of the Black Sea Universities on region of Black Sea in the field of scientific researches”, rector of Turkish university Sakarya, professor Mahomet Durman - “University and public partnership within the framework of projects of scientific cooperation” and others.
At the seminar, also was taking part the assistant secretary general of the NATO Jean Furnet.
