Speaker of Spanish Congress of Deputies visits Milli Majlis

On January 23, a delegation led by Francina Armengol Socias, Speaker of the Congress of Deputies of the Kingdom of Spain, visited Azerbaijan’s Parliament (Milli Majlis).
After touring the plenary session hall of Milli Majlis, the Spanish delegation visited the Heydar Aliyev Museum.
Afterwards, Speaker of the Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova held an expanded meeting with the delegation led by Speaker of the Spanish Congress of Deputies Francina Armengol Socias.
The meeting underscored the special significance of Francina Armengol Socias’s visit as the first one for the Speaker of the Spanish Parliament to Azerbaijan.
During the meeting, the parties discussed a wide range of issues, as well as expanding the legal framework between the two countries to promote the development of bilateral cooperation, the role of economic partnership in bilateral relations, the activities of Spanish companies in Azerbaijan, and the importance of cooperation in renewable energy, education, science, and culture.
Speaker of Milli Majlis Sahiba Gafarova briefed the guest on the projects implemented by Azerbaijan to export renewable energy resources to Europe, highlighting the vital role of Azerbaijan as a transit country in the Middle Corridor, and the progress of the peace process between Azerbaijan and Armenia.
Speaker Sahiba Gafarova emphasized that the de facto peace between Azerbaijan and Armenia following the Washington Summit of August last year had completely changed the realities in region. “Azerbaijan and President Ilham Aliyev are the authors of this completely new reality of peace and security in our region,” Gafarova noted.
The Speaker of the Milli Majlis expressed her confidence that a peace treaty would be signed between the two countries following the initialing of the peace treaty in Washington, D.C.
Francina Armengol Socias said that Spain supports the sovereignty of Azerbaijan and is interested in advancing cooperation with it across various fields.
The Speaker of the Spanish Parliament highlighted the importance of the existing relations between the two countries in the economic field, as well as in the energy sector, noting that Spanish companies are ready to expand their presence in Azerbaijan.
During the conversation, the sides also exchanged views on the prospects of inter-parliamentary ties, as well as other issues of mutual concern.
