STATEMENT OF PRESIDENT OF GREECE KONSTANTINOS STEFANOPOULOS
I hope the representatives of business circles accompanying me will duly do their job and find sectors necessary for fruitful cooperation, find their Azerbaijani partners to cooperate with.
Azerbaijan is a rapidly developing country. Now, we can see this at first hand.
I hope our businessmen will establish successful cooperation with Azerbaijani ones.
We have great experience in the European Union. We are familiar with the region. We have gained great experience in Balkans, and are ready to give a friendly hand to our Azerbaijani partners.
Tomorrow, I will have very interesting meetings at the Slavonic University. I would like to inform you that along with the businessmen, Academicians and scholars form Crete and Patras Universities are accompanying me. Tomorrow, at the Slavonic University, I will be awarded the title of Honorary Doctor, and I am very proud of this.
Finally, I would like to recall my meetings with the late President, the incumbent’s farther. We met first in 1995 in New York during the celebration of the 50th Anniversary of the United Nations. The United Nations provided a separate room for this meeting. President Heydar Aliyev informed me in detail on the Azerbaijan’s greatest problem - the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict. It was him who first provided to me the information about Nagorno-Karabakh. Our next meeting was during OSCE Bucharest Summit. There we also had a very friendly conversation. His serious approach to the matter and great experience will remain in my memory for good.
I want to note that his worthy successor is very successfully continuing his course. Today, we can see great progress in Azerbaijan.
I want to assure you that the Greek side is in earnest about the today’s meetings and those expected tomorrow. We show great interest in Azerbaijan, this is mutual interest. Hope we will see this visit’s successful results soon.
Mr. President, I want to say, Greece is waiting for You in Athens, during summer Olympic Games. Besides, we are waiting for Your reciprocal visit. We hope You will also pay a successful state visit to Greece.
Mr. President, on behalf of our delegation, I want once again to express to You my deep gratitude for the hospitality.
Thank you very much.
