Surgut airport to be named after legendary Azerbaijani geologist Farman Salmanov
Moscow, December 4, AZERTAC
The Surgut International Airport, the largest airport in Russia`s Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug, will be named after the legendary Azerbaijani geologist Farman Salmanov.
The decision was adopted after the nation-wide voting to name the 47 airports after the prominent persons within the Great Names of Russia project.
The results of the voting which featured about 5 million Russian citizens ended on December 4. The two airports of Khanty-Mansiysk - Nizhnevartovsk and Surgut - struggled to name the airports after the Azerbaijani oilman.
Farman Salmanov was born in the village of Morul of Shamkir district of Azerbaijan on May 28, 1928. After graduating from Azerbaijan State Oil Academy, he was engaged in exploration of the oil and gas fields in the city of Surgut of Khanty-Mansiysk Autonomous Okrug. His name went down in the history as the geologist famous for discovering oil fields in Siberia.
Farman Salmanov was awarded the title of the Hero of Socialist Labor, Orders of Lenin and Red Banner of Labor, the Honored geologist of the Russian Federation and other honorary titles. He was an honorary citizen of the city of Surgut, and the US state of Texas.
