TURKEY CONTINUES TO COUNT ON THE UNITED NATIONS ON CYPRUS PROBLEM
The Ambassador stated his country considers that the United Nations, its Secretary General and Security Council should continue to be the main organizational force in resolution of the Cyprus problem. He noted as well that the situation should not have an impact on Turkey’s joining the European Union: during the referenda, Turks Cypriots said “Yes” to the UN’s plan to live in peace with Greek Cypriots, so punishment of Turks Cypriots cannot be allowed like it has been before. The European Union decided on Monday to allot e 259 mln, and today consideration of the embargo abolition is expected. The US has also made it clear that they would take certain steps in this direction. We hope for other country’s joining this process, he said.
It would not be out of place to remind that Russia vetoed the UN’s previous resolution on Cyprus describing its adoption prior to the referenda as certain pressure on Cyprus people’s will. Commenting on this Russia’s position, the Turkish Ambassador expressed hope that Russia would take into account the present situation in the island when Turkey sees the possibility of co-existence of the two parties in Cyprus, one of which side stands for and the other against its settlement
