Ombudsman’s Office and ICRC organize joint workshop

A joint workshop on "Intro to International Mine Action Standards (IMAS) focusing on support to mine victims" was organized by the Office of the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan and the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC). The representatives of the Azerbaijan Mine Action Agency (ANAMA), the Azerbaijan Red Crescent Society, international experts, students from the Baku State University, and the Ombudsman Office took part in the event.
The purpose of the workshop was to increase public awareness about the hazards posed by mines to human life, familiarize participants with the activities carried out for the clearance of unexploded mines planted by Armenia during the occupation period in the liberated territories of Azerbaijan, and learn from international experience in this field.
During the event, Sabina Aliyeva, the Commissioner for Human Rights (Ombudsman) of the Republic of Azerbaijan, and Ignacio Casares Garcia, the Deputy Head of the ICRC Delegation in our country for Operations, delivered opening speeches, wishing success to the workshop's work.
During her speech, S. Aliyeva provided detailed information about the mine problems that Azerbaijan is facing. The Ombudsman emphasized that during the nearly thirty years of occupation, Armenia has committed mine terrorism on our territories, seriously violating international humanitarian law norms. The Ombudsman said that Armenia has still not handed over accurate mine maps to our country and that, as a result of mine explosions and the detonation of military ordnance, both military personnel and civilians have lost their lives.
During the event, experts gave presentations providing information about the activities and international experience in their respective fields, and exchanges of ideas were held with the participants.
Thematic group discussions on the topic were organized during the workshop, and questions raised by the participants were answered. At the end, certificates were presented to the participants.
