Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum to mark 55th anniversary of establishment

On November 17, the Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum, the first museum of its kind will celebrate the 55th anniversary of its establishment.
The museum will present newly acquired exhibits: Early 18th-century artistic embroidery and two pairs of earrings from the second half of the 19th century. The event's date marks the inclusion of Azerbaijani carpet art within the UNESCO Representative List of Intangible Cultural Heritage and the birthday of Latif Karimov, an outstanding carpet artist and the museum's founder.
The artistic embroidery related to Karabakh due to its design and coloring reflects the main features that distinguish Azerbaijani embroideries. The museum acquired the object with the support of Pasha Holding. Significantly, the 16th-century embroideries with such designs were produced in the Safavid palace workshops and considered the most valuable works of art of the time. With the great demand for these embroideries in the 17th-18th centuries and influenced by them, workshops in many cities, including those in Barda, Nakhchivan, and Shamakhi created new samples.
The museum purchased the gold earrings, made in enamel and stamping techniques in Tabriz, from Bonhams Auction House. Multi-component earrings, consisting of several independent elements, were widely popular. Wealthy ladies displayed such earrings from under their head covers. When walking, earrings made a gentle tinkling sound that was believed to ward off evil forces.
The Azerbaijan National Carpet Museum has gained remarkable achievements in preserving and promoting national heritage and enriching its collections over the past years. The presented unique art samples testify to the museum's ongoing successful activities in this regard.
