AZERBAIJAN STRENGTHENS LEGISLATION BASE TO COMBAT TERRORISM FINANCING AND MONEY LAUNDERING
On February 6, Ogtay Asadov, Chairman of the Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan met with the delegation headed by the Director of the Monitoring Department of the Council of Europe Christos Giakoumopoulos.
Speaking about the work, done to protect human rights, develop democracy in Azerbaijan, Ogtay Asadov said Azerbaijan had taken measures to counter terrorism financing, money laundering, as well as to fight against terrorism.
He said that Milli Majlis had approved the “Convention on Laundering, Search, Seizure and Confiscation of the Proceeds from Crime” and the adoption of the bill on “Fighting money laundering and terrorism financing” is due in the parliament’s spring session.
Mr. Asadov said the work in strengthening legislation base would be continued further.
Christos Giakoumopoulos, in his turn, expressing his gratitude to Azerbaijani Parliament Speaker, said his visit to Azerbaijan is o get acquainted with the work, done in Azerbaijan in the sphere of combating terrorism and money laundering.
He expressed his satisfaction for the meetings and highly assessed the measures taken against money laundering and terrorism in Azerbaijan.
The delegation also includes the Committee of Experts on the Evaluation of Anti-Money Laundering Measures and the Financing of Terrorism (MONEYVAL).
Connected to the work, done in fighting money laundering and terrorism, MONEYVAL officials will hold another monitoring in April and the results of the monitoring will be discussed on June.
The sides also had exchange of views on other issues of mutual interests.
