Azerbaijani community of Houston honors victims of Khojaly Massacre
Houston, February 25 (AZERTAC) On February 24, Azerbaijani community of Houston gathered at the Turkish Cultural Center, where the Azerbaijani American Cultural Alliance (AACA) held a commemoration event for the victims of Khojaly Massacre. The event was attended by the Representative Gene Wu from the House of Representatives of the State of Texas, Vice Consul Kenan Aga of the Consulate General of Turkey, Counselor of the Embassy of Republic of Azerbaijan, Co-founder of the U.S. Azeris Network (USAN) Yusif Babanly, members of the Azerbaijani community in Texas and Michigan, and Turkish community of Houston.
Yusif Babanly spoke of the despicable act of terror committed by the Armenian armed forces in and around Khojaly on February 25-26, 1992 and thanked the congressman for paying tribute to the victims of the massacre. Representative Wu then delivered a speech expressing his sorrow for the innocent lives of Azerbaijani civilians lost during the Armenian ethnic cleansing campaign. Gene Wu presented the resolution recognizing Khojaly Massacre that was issued this week. Congressman stated that “I hope that by this resolution we pay respect to the victims of Khojaly Massacre and prevent humankind from similar future tragedies.”
Counselor of the Embassy of Azerbaijan Mammad Talibov thanked Representative Wu for honoring the victims of Khojaly and spoke about Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and subsequent occupation of Azerbaijani lands. Mr. Talibov underlined the importance of strategic relations and mutual understanding between the United States and Azerbaijan. Vice-Consul of the Consulate General of Turkey Kenan Aga expressed condolences to the victims of Khojaly Massacre on behalf of Turkish government and stated that Turkey always stood by its brethren in Azerbaijan. The head of the Azerbaijani American Cultural Alliance Ismayil Ahmedov thanked all dignitaries for their tributes to the victims of the massacre. After the formal speeches, the event proceeded to the presentation by AACA officer Nemat Abilov who spoke about the history of Nagorno-Karabakh conflict and gave details about Khojaly Massacre. Turkish TV correspondent from TRT Haber interviewed Representative Wu and Counselor Talib Mammadov about the Khojaly Massacre and Nagorno-Karabakh conflict in general.
