An Azerbaijani delegation led by Minister of Culture Adil Karimli is attending the 15th General Conference of the Islamic World Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (ICESCO) in Kazan, Republic of Tatarstan, Russian Federation.
During the session, Adil Karimli delivered remarks, conveying Azerbaijan’s congratulations to Salim bin Mohammed AlMalik on his re-election as ICESCO Director-General and extending best wishes for his future endeavors. He stated that President Ilham Aliyev highly values Azerbaijan–ICESCO cooperation and continues to support the further strengthening of ties with the organization.
He noted that the designation of Shusha as the “Cultural Capital of the Islamic World” for 2024, the inscription of the “Imarat” Complex in Aghdam and the State Reserve of Shusha on ICESCO’s Islamic World Heritage List last year, as well as ICESCO’s international technical missions to the liberated territories, serve as clear manifestations of close cooperation.
The minister emphasized that ICESCO’s experience should be applied in other conflict-affected areas of the Islamic world. He noted ongoing cooperation with ICESCO and international partners to restore cultural heritage damaged in conflicts and to develop a roadmap. He also announced that a special session and a security model will be presented at the upcoming World Urban Forum in Baku.
Describing the opening of the ICESCO Regional Office in Baku as a crucial step for strengthening Azerbaijan’s ties with Uzbekistan, Tajikistan, Kazakhstan, and Kyrgyzstan, Adil Karimli emphasized that it will serve as a platform for advancing cooperation in education, science, and culture in the region.
The minister also provided insights into the “ICESCO-Azerbaijan Natavan Excellence Award,” jointly established by the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and ICESCO, noting that it provides a solid foundation and new opportunities for cultural dialogue.
Adil Karimli further stated that ICESCO is a key partner of the “Baku Process,” launched in 2008 on the initiative of President Ilham Aliyev, and invited participants to the 7th World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue, scheduled to take place in Baku from October 27 to 29.
