Head of Azerbaijan Chess Federation Elman Rustamov held a press conference at the International press center on the occasion of FIDE Grand Prix Series, which is to be dedicated to the 85th birthday of nationwide leader Heydar Aliyev.

Mr. Rustamov underlined that at Heydar Aliyev’s initiative, a basis of the rich chess traditions has been laid in 70-80s of the last century. Decrees signed by President Heydar Aliyev in 1998 secured state concern for young chess players, such as T.Rajabov, V.Hashimov, S.Mammadyarov, R.Mammadov and other grandmasters. Three of them will represent Azerbaijan in FIDE Grand Prix, said Rustamov.

14 chess players from 10 countries will attend the event with prize fund € 162 thousand. The competitions will involve 6 stages and to be held in Baku and another five cities. Grandmaster, who ranks the 1st will meet with the World Cup winner and compete for the world chess crown.

Opening ceremony will take place in Azerbaijan State Philharmonic, on April 20. The tournament will end on May 5.
