CHAIRMAN OF AZERBAIJAN`S CONSTITUTIONAL COURT VISITS STRASBOURG
Chairman of the Constitutional Court of Azerbaijan Farhad Abdullayev was in Strasbourg on January 25-26 for a seminar on “The role of consensus in the system of the European Convention on Human Rights", which preceded the official opening of the judicial year of the European Court of Human Rights, Azerbaijan`s permanent mission to the Council of Europe said.
On the sidelines of the event, Abdullayev met with President of the European Court, Mr Jean-Paul Costa. Abdullayev praised judicial reforms in Azerbaijan and elections to fill the positions of judge in the courts of general jurisdiction and provided information about application of the European Convention and European Court’s expertise in the country.
President Costa said it is important that courts in Azerbaijan pay a huge attention to the European experience. According to him, all European courts accept the Strasbourg Court’s precedents as a guiding principle.
Chairman Abdullayev invited Costa to attend the event marking the 10th anniversary of Azerbaijan’s Constitutional Court slated for July 14-15 in Baku.
During his visit, F. Abdullayev also met with Gianni Buquicchio, Secretary General of the Venice Commission.
Azerbaijan’s permanent representative to the Council of Europe, ambassador Arif Mammadov was present at the meetings.
