Davutoglu asks Westerwelle to ensure Turkish media access to NSU trial
Berlin, April 3 (AZERTAC). Turkish Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu had a phone call with his German counterpart, Guido Westerwelle, calling on him to work for allocating seats for the Turkish media and an official envoy to follow the trial of the murder of eight Turks.
Davutoglu told Westerwelle that Turkey is closely following the trial and conveyed Ankara`s concerns over a recent decision by a German court not to allow Turkish reporters to witness the trial. He asked Westerwelle to take necessary measures to allow the Turkish media to cover the trial, the Anatolia news agency reported.
Noting that the German government is on the same page with the Turkish government on the issue, Westerwelle said the German government attaches importance to the Turkish public`s following the trial, adding that necessary measures on the issue are being discussed.
Turkey as well as German politicians, media and the country`s Turkish community accuse the Munich court of gross insensitivity in failing to guarantee Turkish reporters access to a trial of suspected neo-Nazis accused of a racist killing spree.
With local media rushing to secure seats at what will be one of Germany`s most-watched trials in decades, no Turkish newspapers were allocated guaranteed places - a situation that one German government minister said was unacceptable and a potential national embarrassment.
