Istanbul hosts first strategic planning meeting in preparation for COP31

The first strategic planning meeting in preparation for COP31 was held in Istanbul, Türkiye, with the participation of delegations from Türkiye, Azerbaijan, Brazil, Australia, and the Secretariat of the UN Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC).
According to еру Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Azerbaijani delegation was represented at the meeting by a team led by Yalchin Rafiyev, Azerbaijan’s Deputy Foreign Minister and COP29 Lead Negotiator. Additionally, Mukhtar Babayev, Representative of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan on Climate Issues and COP29 President, participated in the opening of the event and addressed the participants online.
The event featured preliminary discussions on Türkiye's preparations for the substantive and logistical organization of COP31, the cooperation mechanism between Türkiye as the COP31 Presidency and Australia, which is responsible for the COP31 negotiation process, and the relevant strategy for ensuring the success of COP31.
In addition, the participants exchanged views on plans for the current year within the framework of the "Mission to 1.5°C" Troika (Azerbaijan, Brazil, and Türkiye), which was established based on a decision taken at COP30.
