KOICHIRO MATSUURA: UNESCO WILL CONTINUE COOPERATING WITH AZERBAIJAN
Director General of UNESCO Koichiro Matsuura said his organization will continue close cooperation with Azerbaijan in the fields of education, culture and science.
Speaking at a press conference in Baku, Matsuura stressed the importance of the UNESCO Regional Literacy Conference which is underway in Azerbaijan`s capital.
He also praised Azerbaijan`s active involvement in UNESCO-initiated projects.
The UNESCO chief expressed satisfaction with the high level of cooperation between the organization and the country.
“UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador Mehriban Aliyeva has made a great contribution to deepening this cooperation. And the current Baku conference will give the impetus to further enhancing our relations”, UNESCO Director General added.
“During my meeting with President Ilham Aliyev we discussed prospects for developing bilateral scientific relations. And we plan to send UNESCO`s science experts to Azerbaijan in future”, Matsuura noted.
Asked whether UNESCO makes any efforts towards preserving historical and cultural monuments in the occupied territories of Azerbaijan, Koichiro Matsuura said the organization is still unable to do something concrete as the conflict is not yet resolved.
Misir Mardanov, Azerbaijan`s education minister, said since becoming UNESCO`s director general Koichiro Matsuura has done great job to establish close cooperation with Azerbaijan.
