“MEDIA AND ELECTIONS: DEMOCRATIC RESPONSIBILITY OF MEDIA” CONFERENCE HELD IN BAKU
A conference on “Media and elections: the democratic responsibility of the media” was held Tuesday in Baku with support of the Council of Europe (CoE).
The event brought together Azerbaijani MPs, journalists, NGOs representatives, foreign and local experts and others.
Opening the event, head of the Azerbaijani parliamentary delegation to PACE Samad Seyidov stressed the necessity of high-level of professionalism of journalists and fair media coverage of election campaign and voting process. According to him, journalists` activities has impact on Azerbaijan`s image in the world.
Member of the Central Election Commission (CEC) Azar Tagiyev said his department was ready to cooperate with journalists.
CoE Secretary General`s special envoy to Azerbaijan Ms.Veronica Kotek said the conference`s main purpose was to contribute providing citizens with accurate and unbiased information on pre-election campaign and voting process. She stressed journalists` activities should be consistent with legislative norms.
Azerbaijani MP Ganira Pashayeva said one of reasons why media representatives encounter problems is that they have insufficient knowledge of Azerbaijan`s legislation. “All sides should know their responsibilities”, she added.
