MEETING AT BAKU STATE UNIVERSITY
As provided by AzerTAj, rector of BSU, corresponding member of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) Abel Maharramov warmly welcomed the visitor and has acquainted participants of the meeting with his biography.
Romano Prodi, having expressed gratitude for kind words in his address, informed, that for the first time he is in the Caucasus. Having presented information on the New Policy of Neighborhood of the European Union, he has told: “Participants of the said program are the European countries which are not included in the Union. Since June 2004, this program included all three Caucasian countries. However, it does not mean that the country - participant will be by all means admitted in the European Union. The EU approaches to the countries of Southern Caucasus not from the regional point of view, and prefers individual approach to each of them. The European policy of neighborhood is extremely important for Azerbaijan from the point of view of globalization, integration to the world economy.
Having touched the Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorny Karabakh conflict, the visitor has stated that prefers settlement of the conflict by negotiations, in this sense, he is pleased with dialogue between the sides.
President of the European Commission has answered numerous questions of participants of the meeting.
