MEETING AT MILLI MAJLIS
The Speaker noted during the meeting that due to the purposeful policy started after Azerbaijan’s independence by national leader Heydar Aliyev, the country has established cooperation with very prestigious international organizations including the European Union. The agreement signed between the European Union and Azerbaijan in Luxemburg in 1996, according to him, fostered development of the interrelations. Today, Mr. Alasgarov said, Azerbaijan and EU are cooperating in realization of over 25 projects. He expressed hope that Mr. Prodi’s current visit to Azerbaijan would give an impetus to further expanding of the bilateral relations.
The Speaker also provided the guest with detailed information about the reasons for the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict over Nagorno-Karabakh, its negative consequences for the country and related activity of the OSCE Minsk group. If the European Union wants establishment of peace in the South Caucasus, it should make a clear-cut distinction between an aggressor and a victim of the aggression, Murtuz Alasgarov said.
President of the European Commission Romano Prodi thanked the Milli Majlis Speaker for the warm meeting and detailed information, and advised that the goal of his current visit to the South Caucasus is to hold an exchange of views on the European New Neighborhood policy, and to promote development of the region.
He noted as well that the European Union sustains the same attitude to all countries without any discrimination and double standards. Mr. Prodi, pointed out that the European Union stands for peaceful resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh conflict, and hopes the parties will come to an agreement, whereupon, according to him, the organization will render to them any rehabilitation assistance.
