Obama to Appoint New Homeland Security Secretary

Baku, October 19 (AZERTAC). U.S. President Barack Obama will appoint former Pentagon adviser and anti-terrorism expert Jeh Johnson as new Homeland Security Secretary.

If the Senate approves this new appointment, Johnson will replace Janet Napolitano, who assumed the presidency at the University of California after resigning from her post in July.

Johnson, 56, also former NY district attorney and former lawyer of the Air Force, would be the first African-American to occupy that post.

Obama candidate was, until 2012, the top official responsible for judicial affairs at the Department of Justice during Obama first term in office.

After the 9/11 attacks, then U.S. president George W. Bush created the Department of Homeland Security (DHS), due to the alleged mistakes made while fighting terrorism.

Apart from dealing with homeland security matters, Johnson will have to dedicate efforts to immigration reform, promised by Obama since 2008, and which, according to his Thursday statement, he wants to promote again at the Congress.

The appointment announcement will take place during a ceremony at the White House.
