OSCE SUPPORTS AZERBAIJAN’s DEMOCRATIC REFORMS, CHAIRMAN-IN-OFFICE KANERVA
The Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe supports conduction of democratic reforms in Azerbaijan, OSCE Chairman-in-Office, Finnish Foreign Minister Ilkka Kanerva told a news conference Thursday in Baku following his meeting with Azeri FM Elmar Mammadyarov.
Commenting on his talks with Mammadyarov, Kanerva said they discussed Nagorno-Karabakh conflict between Armenia and Azerbaijan and democratic situation in the country.
He said OSCE backs continuation of Nagorno-Karabakh peace talks through mediation of Minsk Group, and welcomed the fact both countries` political leadership want to maintain the negotiations.
The OSCE Chairman-in-Office said the peace talks are the only way of settling the dispute, and that they must be accelerated.
Kanerva also touched on forthcoming presidential elections in Azerbaijan, and stressed it is very important that they be just and transparent.
The Finnish FM also condemned Armenia’s setting up polling stations and organizing the voting in Nagorno-Karabakh and other occupied regions of Azerbaijan during recent presidential elections.
Ilkka Kanerva said they also discussed with Mammadyarov preparation for Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev`s visit to Finland scheduled for May.
