PRESIDENT OF AZERBAIJAN ILHAM ALIYEV MEETS WITH UN SECRETARY GENERAL KOFI ANNAN
The meeting held in a sincere atmosphere was focused on Azerbaijan-United Nations relations.
President Ilham Aliyev informed the UN Secretary General on the social and economic development in Azerbaijan, stressing however that the long-running conflicts between Armenian and Azerbaijan over Nagorno-Karabakh hampers the progress not only in our country but also in the South Caucasus remaining a serious threat to peace and stability in the region.
Noting the Azerbaijan’s striving for peaceful solution to the problem, the President pointed out that aggressive Armenia continues to ignore the United Nations Security Council’s well-known resolutions, and emphasized the importance of intensification of the UN’s role with this respect. He expressed the opinion that such a respectable international organization as the United Nations shall not remain indifferent when its resolutions are neglected. Azerbaijan will never put up with occupation of its territories, the President said.
The Head of State recalled that Azerbaijan bears a burden to solve the problems of over a million of refugees from the Armenian aggression, and in this connection, stressed the necessity for the UN’s relevant structures and donor countries to give more attention to this issue.
Noting for his part that the frontiers recognized by the United Nations are unchangeable, Mr. Kofi Annan expressed hope for resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh problem through negotiations.
