‘Resolution of Nagorno-Karabakh dispute is number one priority’
Baku, February 24 (AZERTAC). Resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh problem is the number one priority for Azerbaijan since it affects not only relationships with Armenia but also the political and economic situation in the whole South Caucasus, Hasan Mammadzade, ambassador of Azerbaijan to Lituania told DELFI portal in his interview.
The ambassador reminded that these events were then covered by incumbent mayor of Vilnius Arturas Zuokas just as other Lithuanian journalists. He noted that the documentary Endless Corridor on the Nagorno-Karabakh events shot by Lithuanian and Scandinavian filmmakers was screened in Vilnius on February 19. On the dynamic development of Azerbaijan's economy, the diplomat said that the economy of Azerbaijan accounts for 80 percent of the whole economy of the region.
In his interview, the ambassador touched on the cooperation of Azerbaijan with international organizations and the country`s interest in deepening equal good neighborhood relations with Georgia and Russia.
“There is a sustainable positive dynamics in Azerbaijan-Lithuania relations. Reciprocal visits at various levels and their intensity underlines there is no alternative to the policy of cementing cooperation in all fields. The humanitarian cooperation is mainly reflected in the shared history of both peoples, their aspiration for keeping succession of unique cultures.”
The ambassador pointed out that the Azerbaijani Trade House is scheduled to be established in Lithuania. “Azerbaijan is ready to invest in the economy of Lithuania.
The main issue on the agenda is the realization of the Viking transport project related to the cargo traffic. It will allow to expand trade between the countries.”
On the human rights protection measures put in place under leadership of President Ilham Aliyev, the diplomat told about the national action plan on enhancement of the effectiveness of the human rights and freedoms protection.
The ambassador said that the major regional problem is the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute, which hinders development of the region. Azerbaijan hopes for Lithuania`s efforts as the presidency of the European Union. Azerbaijan expects more support of the EU in forging talks between Armenian and Azerbaijan towards implementation of four resolutions of the UN Security Council, decisions of OSCE, NATO, PACE, EU and other international organizations, which must lead to liberation of occupied territories and return of IDPs to their homes and determining Nagorno-Karabakh status within the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan. “
In his interview, Hasan Mammadzade expressed gratitude to Lithuania for the fair support of the territorial integrity of Azerbaijan and members of the Saeimas for the last year`s appeal to the European parliament to recognize the Khojaly massacre. The Ambassador touched on the Khojaly genocide, saying Lithuania`s voice is important for the triumph of justice.
