Separate initiatives on Karabakh do not reflect Lithuania’s official position
Vilnius, March 4 (AZERTAC). Initiative of separate members of the Seimas to set up a friendship group with the so-called Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, unrecognized by the world community, do not reflect the official position of Lithuania, Benediktas Juodka, Chair of the Seimas Committee on Foreign Affairs said after his meeting with Azerbaijani Ambassador in Vilnius Hasan Mammadzade.
“At the meeting, it was confirmed that the official position of Lithuania on relations with foreign states are expressed in current international treaties and remain unchanged. Benediktas Juodka noted that the statements and initiatives of individual members of the Seimas of Lithuania do not reflect the official position of the Seimas,” said the press release of the Seimas, issued after the meeting.
It is also noted that “the formation of parliamentary, inter-parliamentary groups and friendship groups is an activity that should be consistent with the purposes and principles of the foreign policy of Lithuania.”
“Juodka assured the ambassador of Azerbaijan in the fact that the committee invited the leadership of the Seimas in order to establish a clear procedure for the establishment and operation of groups of inter-parliamentary relations,” the Public Relations Department of Seimas said.
Last week, the Lithuanian Seimas held an event at which the presence of the Foreign Minister of the unrecognized Nagorno-Karabakh Republic, it was decided to set up a group of friendship with Nagorno Karabakh. Azerbaijani ambassador to Lithuania presented a note, in which he stated that it “could have a negative impact on bilateral relations”.
