SPEAKER OF AZERBAIJAN PARLIAMENT MEETS PACE MONITROING COMMITTEE CO-RAPPORTEURS
Speaker of Azerbaijan Parliament Ogtay Asadov on February 7 met PACE monitoring Committee co-rapporteurs Andreas Herkel and Yevgeniya Zhivkova.
Informing on the works done in the field of human rights protection, improvement of national legislation and development of democratic principles, Speaker of Milli Majlis said integration to Euro-Atlantic space is the priority of the foreign policy of official Baku. Majority of the obligations Azerbaijan took before the Council of Europe have been implemented, the Speaker underlined. At his words, the international conventions were ratified, and some laws were brought in line with European standards. There are some questions demanding long term, one of them is connected to minorities, the question, 20 of 44 COE members states cannot cope with so far.
Chairman of Milli Majlis stressed that Azerbaijani parliamentarians have drafted two laws to this end and they were submitted to relevant organizations for examination.
Andreas Herkel expressed gratitude for provided conditions and cooperation during the visit. He highly assessed Azerbaijan’s integration to the Euro-Atlantic space and the ongoing democratic and legal alterations in the country. Mr. Herkel especially underlined cooperation of Azerbaijan with the Council of Europe.
In meeting, also were exchanged views on numerous questions of mutual interest.
