Taekwondo's new breed knock out the veterans
Baku, June 16, AZERTAC
The Taekwondo competition opened on Tuesday morning at Crystal Hall 3 with both the men's and women's lightweights in action, and providing plenty of upsets for the Baku crowd to savour.
The 2014 Youth Olympic Games bronze medallist Jesus Tortosa Cabrera, 17, will face 2014 European champion Rui Braganca, 23, in the final of the men's -58kg.
The women's final features 2015 world bronze medallist Tijana Bogdanovic of Serbia, 17, and Britain's Charlie Maddock, 19.
Cabrera sent top seed Levent Tuncat, 26, of Germany tumbling out of the competition having breezed through the earlier rounds.
“What made the difference today was that I always believed that I could reach the final. I have gone into every single match convinced that I was going to beat my opponent no matter who he was,” said Cabrera.
Bogdanovic defeated Croatian top seed and Olympic bronze medallist Lucija Zaninovic, 27, in the quarters and then narrowly overcame a stiff challenge from Azerbaijan's Patimat Abakarova, beating her on golden point in the additional fourth round.
The finals take place from 20:00.
