UNESCO DIRECTOR GENERAL BECOMES ANAS HONORARY MEMBER
Head of Azerbaijan National Academy of Sciences (ANAS) Mr. Mahmud Karimov today has presented Diploma of ANAS’s honorary member to the UNESCO Director General Koichiro Matsuura in Azerbaijani National Museum of History.
The ceremony participants warmly welcomed the President of Heydar Aliyev Foundation, UNESCO and ISESCO Goodwill Ambassador Mrs. Mehriban Aliyeva, Princess Laurentien of the Netherlands, and UNESCO Goodwill Ambassadors, Princess Firyal of Jordan and former president of Iceland Vigdis Finnbogadottir.
Addressing the participants, Mr. Karimov underlined that the diploma was presented to Mr. Matsuura for establishment of peace and stability in the world, organization of intercivilizational dialogue in the fields of science, education, culture and information, enhancing cooperation between UNESCO and Azerbaijan and preservation of heritage of Azerbaijani nation.
UNESCO Director General, in his turn, underlined that in the course of his first visit to Baku, during the presidency of nationwide leader Heydar Aliyev, he had witnessed the high attention given to the moral values, history and culture of Azerbaijan. This policy is successfully going on today, said Mr. Matsuura. Director General emphasized that after election Mrs. Mehriban Aliyeva as UNESCO Goodwill Ambassador, close cooperation had been established between Azerbaijan and UNESCO. Ichari Shahar, Gobustan Reserve were entered into the World Cultural Heritage’s list, he said.
Mr. Matsuura thanked ANAS leadership for high diploma and expressed his hope for further expansion of cooperation.
