UNESCO REGIONAL LITERACY CONFERENCE (5TH) WRAPS UP IN BAKU
As earlier was informed, Baku hosted the Regional Literacy Conference (5th) supported by UNESCO, the Heydar Aliyev Foundation and Ministry of Education of Azerbaijan.
On 16 May the Conference ended.
Opening the last day discussions, director of the Moscow office of UNESCO Mark Richmond spoke of the necessity of conditions for maintenance of a qualitative preliminary education. According to him, experts for literacy and elementary education should be trained under professional curriculums. However, frequently training is short and superficial. One more important question is the curriculum, he stressed.
John Worhouse from England dwelt on quality of education and effective use of the obtained knowledge.
Director of the German institute for training of adults and expert from Poland spoke of the importance of numerous projects for elimination of illiteracy, more active integration of people, including the migrants, to society.
In discussions, also was speaking Afgan Abdullayev (Azerbaijan), representative of the Council of Europe Ceaser Birzae, Catherina Popovich (Serbia), Lorentz Lasseng (Austria), deputy director of the Swiss Federation for adult education Rooth Germann and Victor Bolotov (Russia).
Academician of Azerbaijan ANAS Urkhan Alakbarov spoke of the education of refugees and IDPs and cooperation of relevant organizations in this field. He noted useful activity of the Heydar Aliyev Foundation in this sphere.
The conferees noted importance of wider approach to the problem of illiteracy, stressing that the basic conductors of literacy should become the state and NGOs. The basic problem in the European countries is connected with absence of coordinated systems for opportunities of education. As stated, solving the problem of illiteracy will stimulate close cooperation of the European countries.
Assistant Director General of UNESCO on education Nicolas Berneth has expressed to the President of Heydar Aliyev Foundation, UNESCO and ISESCO Goodwill Ambassador Mehriban Aliyeva gratitude for support in carrying out of the Conference.
The Conference ended in adoption of final document.
