US SENATOR BROWNBACK TO VISIT BAKU
US Senator Sam Brownback will visit Azerbaijan on February 20 as part of his South Caucasus trip.
He is scheduled to meet state officials and visit the US-Azerbaijan Chamber of Commerce and the Diplomatic Academy under the Foreign Ministry.
Brownback is the senior senator from Kansas, and was a Republican candidate in the 2008 Presidential election.
He is a member of the Judiciary Committee, the Senate Appropriations Committee, the Joint Economic Committee, and the Commission on Security and Cooperation in Europe, also known as the Helsinki Commission.
Senator Brownback is known for his friendly attitude towards Azerbaijan. He has repeatedly proposed to prepare a bill waiving Freedom Support Act`s Section 907; and after the events of 9/11, the White House adopted the law in 2002.
The Senator is also the author of Silk Road Strategy Act providing for support of economic and political independence of Southern Caucasian and Central Asian countries.
Yashar Aliyev, Azeri Ambassador to the United States, said in an interview with AZERTAC`s Washington-based correspondent that the fact visits by US senators and congressmen to Azerbaijan became more frequent, once again demonstrates the USA`s growing interest in the country`s and Azerbaijan`s having strong positions both in the region and international arena.
