VISIT OF DEFENSE MINISTER OF AZERBAIJAN TO TURKEY
On 4 October, General Hilmi Ozkek, chief of the HQ of the Armed Forces of Turkey, has received the delegation headed by defense minister Safar Abiyev.
Mr. Safar Abiyev conveyed to the Chief of HQ cordial greetings of President Ilham Aliyev.
At the meeting where were discussed sate and prospects of Azerbaijan-Turkey military cooperation, defense minister dwelt on the Armenia-Azerbaijan conflict, underlining that Armenia does not want to pull out from the occupied territories, ignores the UN Security Council’s resolutions.
General Hilmi Ozkek stated that since Armenia has not released the occupied lands, the Turkey-Armenia borders would not be opened.
Colonel-general Safar Abiyev has invited chief of the HQ of the Armed Forces of Turkey pay an official visit to Azerbaijan.
At the briefing after the meeting, was informed on international activity of the Armed Forces of Turkey its role in ensuring security in Europe and world, on the Azerbaijan-Turkey military cooperation.
Safar Abiyev has also met Commander of the Exercises and Doctrine Commandment, General Ismail Kocman, familiarized with the Commandment’s program and activity and spoke to the Azerbaijani militaries training here.
On 5 October, colonel-general Safar Abiyev met navy admiral Ozden Ornek, Commander of Turkish Navy, discussed perspectives of cooperation between Azerbaijan and Turkey in this field.
The same day, defense minister of Turkey Vecdi Konul has received Safar Abiyev. The defense ministers exchanged with statements.
Mr. Abiyev updated his counterpart on the military-political situation in the South Caucasus region. The sides also focused the question of occupation by Armenia of Azerbaijani lands.
Turkey makes every possible effort to support Azerbaijani in liberation of the occupied lands and backs territorial integrity of Azerbaijan, the Turkish minister emphasized.
Colonel-general Safar Abiyev has invited his colleague to visit Azerbaijan.
Defense minister of Azerbaijan Republic has also met the commander of Aegean Army, General Ishig Koshener and Air Exercises commander, General Yilmaz Oghuz in Izmir.
On 6 October, President of Turkey Ahmad Necdet Sezer received delegation of Azerbaijan.
Mr. Ahmad Necdet Sezer highly appreciated current state of the Azerbaijan-Turkey relations, noting, “We are pleased with every step of development made by Azerbaijan”.
Turkish President said that his country is against freezing of this conflict. The OSCE Minsk Group increases its efforts in this field, which pleases us, he stressed. Turkey fully supports fair position of Azerbaijan, Mr. Sezer underlined.
Expressing gratitude, defense minister of Azerbaijan said that Turkey should better to confirm its leadership in the Caucasus.
Colonel-general Safar Abiyev expressed gratitude to the President of Turkey for all-round support of Azerbaijan.
On 6 October, the delegation returned home.
