AZERBAIJAN-NATO PARTNETSHIP TURNS 15
Baku, 4 May (AZERTAC). Partnership between Azerbaijan and NATO turns 15. The partnership was founded by national leader of Azerbaijan Heydar Aliyev on May 4, 1994, at the Organization`s Headquarters in the frame of Partnership For Peace (PfP) Program.
Further stage of this partnership was followed by execution of the “Individual Action Plan” between the parties. After 10 years since Azerbaijan joined the PfP Program, in May 2004, President Heydar Aliyev has presented necessary partnership documents to the Secretary General of the North-Atlantic Alliance. Thus, since that time a new phase in relations of Azerbaijan and the NATO started.
The Presidential Decree signed by Ilham Aliyev gave a strong impetus to development of partner relationship between Azerbaijan and the Alliance. Azerbaijan cooperated with the Organization in Iraq and Kosovo, and currently this co-op continues in Afghanistan.
NATO`s position on the Armenia-Azerbaijan, Nagorno Karabakh conflict has been reflected in its statement made in the Brussels Summit in 1994. The Alliance recognizes territorial integrity and sovereignty of the Caucasian states, and supports settlement of all the conflicts, including the Nagorno Karabakh conflict, in the frame of international law and principles.
