A conference titled “Reimagining Cities: Azerbaijan-Pakistan Dialogue on Urban Planning and Sustainable Development,” initiated by the Embassy of Azerbaijan in Pakistan, was held at the National University of Modern Languages (NUML) in Islamabad, Pakistan.
The event brought together NUML academic staff, students, and members of the diplomatic corps. A video highlighting Azerbaijan’s large-scale restoration efforts in its liberated territories under the “Great Return” program was screened during the conference.
In his remarks, Khazar Farhadov, Azerbaijan’s Ambassador to Pakistan, noted that 2026 has been declared the “Year of Urban Planning and Architecture” in Azerbaijan. He described Baku’s hosting of the 13th session of the World Urban Forum (WUF13) as an indicator of Azerbaijan’s contribution to global urbanization processes and the great trust placed in the country.
Highlighting housing as one of the central pillars of sustainable development, the diplomat noted that the “Smart City” and “Smart Village” concepts currently being implemented in Azerbaijan’s Garabagh and East Zangezur economic regions, as well as the Fuzuli, Zangilan, and Lachin international airports, have contributed significantly to the post-conflict restoration process, adding that Pakistan could also benefit from this experience.
Farhadov emphasized the importance of strengthening bilateral relations through cooperation in urban planning and sustainable development.
Other speakers highlighted Azerbaijan’s successful hosting of COP29, as well as the large-scale restoration works in Baku and the liberated territories, describing them as exemplary models of modern and sustainable urban planning.
