The short documentary film Palaces of Memory by director Matlab Mukhtarov has received an “Honorable Mention” award in the short documentary category at the 21st South East European Film Festival (SEEfest), held in Los Angeles, United States.
SEEfest is an annual Los Angeles-based festival showcasing Southeast European cinema to international audiences and promoting diverse perspectives in the United States. Out of thousands of submissions, only six films were selected for this year’s documentary competition. The inclusion of “Palaces of Memory” marks a notable success for Azerbaijani documentary cinema.
The film’s world premiere took place at the Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival in the Czech Republic.
Directed by Matlab Mukhtarov and produced by Emil Najafov, the film was produced by Rental Azerbaijan, with post-production supported by ARKA under the Ministry of Culture.
“Palaces of Memory” explores the director’s search for his earliest memory. While retracing his childhood and walking through the streets of the city where he was born and raised, he begins to question the authenticity of a memory involving his father, who passed away when he was one year old, and his grandmother.
The film’s premiere at the prestigious Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival, followed by a Special Mention at SEEfest, highlights the increasing international recognition of Azerbaijani documentary cinema.
