COUNCIL OF EUROPEAN UNION ISSUES DECLARATION PRAISING AZERBAIJAN
The Council of the European Union has issued a declaration highly praising the work done towards protection of human rights and freedom in Azerbaijan.
The declaration reads “The European Union welcomes the release of five journalists on the occasion of Solidarity Day of World Azerbaijanis. President Ilham Aliyev`s pardon is a positive step towards Azerbaijan`s fulfillment of international and European obligations with regard to freedom of the press”.
The declaration stresses “The European Union is convinced that such political gestures could contribute to strengthening the partnership between Azerbaijan and the European Union and would be conducive to a more favorable political atmosphere in the run-up to the electoral campaign”.
According to the declaration, the candidate countries - Turkey, Croatia and Macedonia; as well as Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Montenegro and Serbia; and the European Free Trade Association countries and members of the European Economic Area - Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Moldova align themselves with this declaration.
