INTELLIGENTSIA OF AZERBAIJAN ADDRESSES THEIR COLLEAGUES FROM TURKEY

Baku, 6 April (AZERTAC). Representatives of intelligentsia of the Azerbaijan Republic addressed their colleagues from Turkey. The Address, in particular, states: “We, the representatives of intelligentsia of Azerbaijan, attentively watch the big diplomatic and political efforts of the Republic of Turkey directed on restoration of peace, good neighborhood and tranquility in region of the Middle East and Caucasus. Preparation of a special package of proposals by official Ankara with a view of stability maintenance on the Caucasus has considerably raised our hopes in this area.”

However, the reality consists that Armenia, contrary to universal values, and also principles of peace, democracy, stability and regional cooperation, norms of international law, occupies 20 percent of the territory of Azerbaijan, has conducted ethnic cleanse in the said territories. It has destroyed historical and cultural monuments and changed cultural shape of region, and has illegally resettled Armenians in Karabakh, exploits natural resources of territory and has created out-of-control conditions for transnational criminality.

Though the authorities of Armenia make promises with ostentatious “good intentions”, as a matter of fact, they continue the campaign of lie and slander against all Turkic world. We do not doubt at all that ruling circles of Turkey have enough information about it. For this reason Turkey throughout many years did not establish diplomatic relations with Armenia and did not give in any form of the consent to border opening. And the Azerbaijan state and society hand in hand with Turkey, seriously trusting in restoration of historical justice, were proud till this time of its reliability.”

Along with all it, continuous distribution in mass media of the messages on opening by the government of Turkey of the borders with Armenia causes in us, representatives of the intelligentsia of Azerbaijan, deep concern. We regard realization of this as the fact, deeply contradicting national interests of the Turkish people and interests of the Turkic world. We state inadmissibility of the opening of borders between Turkey and Armenia and we consider that adjustment of communications between Turkey and Armenia which from the moment of occurrence regularly acts with claims in territory of the next states, long time keeps the Azerbaijani lands under occupation and does not think at all of leaving from them, resorting to political gamble, puts forward against the Turkish people of the claim concerning notorious "genocide", rendering to the terrorist organization PKK all assistance, manpower and the weapon, and pursues the goal how to split Turkish Republic from within. And at last, the unilateral concession to the Armenian regime that had shed blood of tens of thousand Turks would become disrespect for historical traditions and cultural values of the Turkish nation. However, this concession will not affect in any way the refusal of Armenia of the claims to Turkey. At the same time, realization of such step by the ruling Party of Justice and Development (AKP) would negatively affect the fraternal relations expressed by the principle “one nation - two states”.

The Address, signed by the National Academy of Sciences of Azerbaijan and the Union of Writers of Azerbaijan further runs: “We, the representatives of intelligentsia of Azerbaijan, resolutely protest against opening of the borders and adjustment of relations with the Armenia which has made territorial expansion a component of state policy, and regard such attempts as a step made contrary to the will of the Turkish people, and a serious blow to the relations of historical brotherhood with Turkey. We call Turkey, the closest to us from the point of view of language, religion and cultural values, adhering and today as it was along the centuries, the same position of Azerbaijan, and further to keep objectivity and adherence to principles which it showed before in relation to the aggressive policy of Armenia.

We hope that the government of Turkey attentively will approach to this question, and undertake a step adequate to the common interests of the Turkic world.”
