Turkish consul general attacked in Greece's Kavala
Baku, January 10 (AZERTAC). A group of supporters of Greece's far-right Golden Dawn party attacked the car of Turkish Consul General Osman Эlhan Юener in Komotini (Gьmьlcine in Turkish) during an anti-Turkey protest.
Єener said he was leaving the municipal building in Kavala following a meeting with the mayor when protesters crossed a police barrier and started kicking and punching his car on Wednesday. Speaking to private broadcaster NTV, Єener said the municipality had posted the planned meeting with him on its website, noting that this is probably how the protesters learned about his visit.
“I requested the meeting with the mayor two days ago. Last night, the municipality's press office naturally announced my visit. This is how this group learned about it,” he told NTV on Wednesday evening.
He recounted that his car was first stopped as soon as it entered Kavala by the police, who warned him that the municipal building was surrounded by extremist groups. “I told them that I would keep my appointment and that they should take the necessary security measures. The police asked me to wait for 20 minutes until backup forces arrive. We drove around for 20 minutes,” he said.
When he finally arrived at the municipal building, the consul general was greeted with slogans against Turkey and its founder, Kemal Atatьrk. The meeting with the mayor lasted an hour but the consul general was asked by the police to wait for another half hour inside because the number of protesters had increased during the meeting, forcing the police to request more backup.
When he left the building in his car, some of the protesters managed to cross the police barrier and kicked and hit the vehicle. Some of the protesters spat at the windows of the car, the Anatolia news agency reported.
Єener said the Greek police took the necessary security measures and added that the attack was the act of a certain group that is unhappy about the Turkish-Greek friendship. “I don't think they represent the whole of Greece,” he said.
Golden Dawn is a far-right party promoting a strongly anti-immigrant agenda. It is widely described as neo-Nazi in the media. The support for the party is believed to be growing since Greece's last election in 2012, when it won 18 seats in the 300-member parliament.
